Local snags ‘Lady Bird’ gig
Coral Cunningham, who grew up in Nevada City and attended Sierra Mountain High School Independent Study Program, is a costumer who racked up her first film credit with the phenomenally successful movie, “Lady Bird,” directed by Greta Gerwig. The 27-year-old began taking classes at age 15 in art history from Sierra College before moving to San Francisco and attending City College of San Francisco and studying the same field. She went into commercial work when she moved to Los Angeles and eventually, through hard work and contacts, scored the “Lady Bird” gig as a costumer only a year ago at age 26. “Art history gave me an incredible foundation,” she said. “I can go back to it for points of reference for the design process or be able to talk to creators and directors who want something different.” As far as advice to those starting out in the field of costume work, she said it’s not for everybody. “It certainly did not happen overnight,” she said. “I worked a lot of jobs that were not well paid and didn’t have much of a social life. It takes time and my patience paid off.”
